The SilverStone RM31 is a 3U rackmount server chassis designed for system builders who need flexible power supply configurations and room for larger server motherboards. Supporting SSI-EEB, SSI-CEB, E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards, it provides a versatile platform for rack-mounted workstations, computing servers, and specialised business systems.

Unlike the compact RM31-MINI, the RM31 features a deeper 488mm chassis with a primary power supply position supporting SFX, SFX-L, or compatible 2U CRPS redundant power supplies. A secondary SFX/SFX-L power supply can also be installed with the required drive cage removal. Combined with front 360mm radiator support and eight expansion slots, the RM31 offers greater configuration flexibility for demanding rackmount builds.

Why Choose This SilverStone RM31 3U Rackmount Server Chassis

  • Supports primary SFX/SFX-L or compatible 2U CRPS redundant PSUs, plus an optional secondary SFX/SFX-L position requiring removal of the 3.5" drive cage.

Overview

SilverStone RM31 is a 3U rackmount server chassis designed for workstation and server builds requiring flexible motherboard, cooling, and power supply configurations. It supports SSI-EEB through Mini-ITX motherboards, eight expansion slots, front 360mm radiator mounting, and up to four internal drive positions.

Who It Suits

  • Server and workstation builders needing SSI-EEB, SSI-CEB, E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboard support and eight expansion slots.
  • Liquid-cooled rackmount systems requiring front 120mm, 240mm or 360mm radiator mounting and flexible cooling configurations.
  • System integrators needing primary SFX/SFX-L or compatible 2U CRPS redundant power supplies, with an optional secondary SFX/SFX-L position.

Not suitable for high-density NAS systems requiring numerous hot-swap drive bays or installations with insufficient rack depth.

Before You Buy

  • Verify motherboard dimensions and rack clearance. The chassis measures 438 × 132 × 488mm and supports CPU coolers up to 110mm tall.
  • Primary PSU options include SFX/SFX-L or compatible 2U CRPS redundant units. Removing the 3.5" drive cage eliminates the specified primary PSU depth restriction.
  • Installing a secondary SFX/SFX-L PSU requires removing the 3.5" drive cage. Expansion-card clearance is up to 458mm long without front fans or radiators, and 115mm wide.

What is the difference between RM31 and RM31-MINI?

The RM31 is 488mm deep, compared with 391mm for the RM31-MINI. Both support SSI-CEB, E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX motherboards, but the RM31 additionally supports SSI-EEB. The RM31 also provides an additional 2.5" drive position, longer expansion card clearance, and support for compatible 2U CRPS redundant power supplies. Choose the RM31 for larger server hardware and more flexible PSU configurations, or the RM31-MINI when shorter chassis depth is a priority.

Can I use two PSUs for redundancy?

The RM31 supports compatible 2U CRPS redundant power supplies in its primary PSU position. It also has a secondary SFX/SFX-L PSU position that becomes available when the 3.5" drive cage is removed. Installing two independent PSUs does not automatically provide power redundancy; this requires compatible power distribution and failover hardware.

What happens if I remove the 3.5" drive cage?

Removing the 3.5" drive cage eliminates the manufacturer's specified 250mm primary PSU depth restriction and makes room for a secondary SFX/SFX-L power supply. Physical clearance must still be verified, and removing the cage reduces the available drive mounting options.
